Legal Information / Copyright Notices

Cosmicplay.net is my dissertation for a PhD in Depth Psychology at Pacifica Graduate Institute in Carpinteria, California. In accordance with the copyright laws of the United States, this dissertation, in good faith, uses various copyrighted materials under the Fair Use educational provisions. All quotations and images have been attributed to their original sources, which can be found in the reference list.

My dissertation is about play and seeks in its form to embody play and be playful. In accordance with Pacifica's motto "animae mundi colendae gratia" (for the sake of tending soul in and of the world), cosmicplay.net seeks a wider audience than the halls of academia and thus is written in a more conversational and casual tone and uses images, a la Alice in Wonderland, to accomplish those goals. The use of the copyrighted images I have chosen such as screenshots, photographs and cover art, are used in the context of scholarly critique and are important for advancing and integral to my research objectives.

My dissertation uses copyrighted works in a transformative context, for critical analysis and does not seek to supercede the original market for these works. Indeed it is hoped that the market for the works cited herein will be enhanced. My dissertation builds constructively on these works and hopes to bring the more academic works cited to a broader audience, and hopes to show the educational value of the more commercial works cited.

The copyrighted material has been used to create something new— an artistic dissertation which is a website that allows the reader to experience the dissertation in any way they choose, as well as to be able to go beyond the dissertation at any point out into the internet, or the world. The original works have been transformed by adding new expression and meaning. New insights and understandings have been provided that show these works in a new and different light. Many of the images used have been used to form collages, which demonstrate different things that are discussed, too.

My dissertation seeks to show the promise, perils and transformative power of play through these cultural pieces, as well as in culture itself, and thus it is integral to my dissertation to include examples of culture as well as the cultural pieces themselves.
